Wij beginnen anders. [Zie deze posting van woensdagavond, red.] “Death toll rises to at least 10 in Mumbai terrorist attacks, dozens injured; new reports of explosions, incidents – local TV “, bericht het breaking news collectief (@breakingnewson) op Twitter. Vanaf dat moment loopt ons live blog, is het ongeveer half acht ’s avonds Nederlandse tijd, en is het al een paar uur hommeles in India.

Tijd voor een nieuws-experiment. Met de live blogservice ‘Cover it Live‘ is het mogelijk om van minuut tot minuut verslag te doen van een gebeurtenis. En met hulp van het internet hoef je niet in India te zijn om dat te kunnen doen. Je bundelt eenvoudig de breaking newsfeeds van CNN, BBC en uiteraard het altijd snelle BreakingNewsOn. Je zoekt zelf het een en ander uit om de nieuwsfeed te verrijken en je bent klaar.

Dacht ik.

Persoonlijk
Als je dan zelf het een en ander checkt blijkt dat eigenlijk de hoofdmoot van het nieuws bij IBN vandaan komt. Een Indisch nieuwskanaal dat nauw samenwerkt met CNN. Daar staan de verslaggevers op straat tussen het geweld. En er worden video’s gemaakt die te embedden zijn. Foto’s hebben ze ook, foto’s die wij in Nederland terug zien als EPA- Reuters- of ANP-beelden. De video’s en foto’s posten Peter en ik als vanzelf in de liveblog.

Twist
Maar. De twist komt van de twitteraars en bloggers uit Bombay. Er is een twitteraar, Vinu, die foto’s publiceert op Flickr: “Taken late night Nov 26 at Colaba. Arranged in the order I took the snaps as I visited this place – 15 mins after I heard the sound. 2 mins walking distance from my house.”

Verhaal
In plaats van nieuws wordt het nu een verhaal. Door het internet kan de cynische en macabere stelregel ‘doden gedeeld door afstand’ (of vice versa) worden opgegeven: “St. George hospital now in need of blood donations”, is de noodkreet van ‘Mumbaiattack’ op Twitter. En zo gaat het door: “Oberio hotel has had a rescue attack but now news on results. Firing has been heard.”

En dan Netra: “Called again at J J Hospital & St.George Hospital … no requirement of Blood at the Moment ! they will call bk if they needs the blood !”

Fact check my ass
Geen idee of dit waar is uiteraard. Geen manier voor ons om dit te checken. Wat wel opvalt: Aditya Sengupta post: “The Taj Mahal Palace and Tower (With a fire, possibly because of grenade explosions, on the top floor of the old building, The Palace (heritage site), as well as a hostage situation and gun-battle on the premises).”
